LECTIO VISCERALIS: ONLINE EMBODIED REFLECTION & PRAYER (LSFT-8300)

(09/08/2023-09/29/2023)

Course Memo

Meets four Fridays in September (8, 15, 22, 29) [= the first four weeks of LS/FT XXXX]. This online course introduces you to Theatre of the Oppressed (TO), an embodied, critical, and creative form of art-ivism. Experience “Lectio Visceralis,” a movement-based form of critical and imaginative Ignatian prayer. Engage in TO games, exercises, and analytical practices. Experience Forum Theatre, the signature form of TO in which audience members cross the “fourth wall” and replace the main character to explore the challenges and implications of tackling oppression. And learn to use all these techniques in online formats for prayer, reflection, and social change. Work includes readings; practicing TO facilitation; writing a 4-6 page theological reflection; and compiling a brief TO portfolio for your present or future ministry setting (introduction to TO; adapting two Lectio Visceralis services; assembling four annotated TO exercises for future use). Students at all levels welcome. [35 max enrollment; Auditors With Faculty Permission]
