Course Memo
This readings course integrates historical, literary, and theological perspectives on John’s Gospel. Students will read the text of John carefully and repeatedly in conversation with major scholarship on John’s Gospel. Major topics include John’s Christology, soteriology, pneumatology, and ecclesiology; John’s relationship to Jewish Scriptures, to other Gospels, and to the Johannine epistles; early Christian reading of John; and theological interpretations of John today. Discussion is combined with reflective and analytical writing. The course will involve substantial reading. Student learning will be assessed on the basis of participation, weekly essays, and a final synthesis. The course will be offered virtually and will meet from 9am–12pm on Wednesdays from June 11th to July 16th. Prerequisites: A graduate-level introduction to Gospel literature (e.g., NT2528) is recommended but not required. [20 max enrollment]
