Course Memo

The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) is a gift to the ecumenical movement of the church because it provides various Christian communities a way to exist in their particular locations while connecting globally in spirit through common reflection and engagement of select biblical passages. This course seeks to live out the fruit of ecumenism by inviting participants to learn biblical exegesis with the RCL focusing on the Gospel of Matthew. This engagement begins by acknowledging one’s context, community, and tradition(s) as key channels in exegeting biblical passages. The course invites participants to work with commentaries as conversation partners in historical, ideological, and socio-ethical analysis of each biblical passage. Participants will synthesize a critical and contextual analysis of select biblical passages. Moreover, this course will discuss the intricacies of canonical criticism, the dangers of anti-Semitic reading of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, and the socio-ethical nuances of “faithful” biblical exegesis.
