Course Memo
This course reviews the Shin Buddhist tradition in the Japanese medieval society and politics, and religious thought, including non-Pure Land traditions and other Pure Land schools. By the historiographical approach, this course examines how the Shin historical and doctrinal context was developed in the social-economic situation and various historical events during the premodern time, including the dialogue with the West. Evaluation Method: Online (synchronous) directed and navigated by the instructor’s weekly learning instruction, readings and assignment posted in the GUT Moodle system. The main activities are readings, submitting assignments, and participating in the weekly zoom session and discussion every Wednesday at 6:00PM-7:30PM(PST).
