BIBLICAL PREACHING (HM-8245)

(09/05/2023-12/15/2023)

Course Memo

This course introduces students to necessary elements of biblical preaching. Students will learn and appropriate a particular biblical and contextual exegetical method for preaching in order to prepare, preach and reflect upon two sermons offered in a congregation of their choice (same context for both sermons and final presentation). Particular attention will be paid to the effect context has on the preaching task and the participatory role of “the hearer” in that process. Through video lectures, course readings, online discussion with peers and instructor, engagement with a congregation, and various written and verbal assignments, students will begin to develop their own theology of proclamation and will articulate it in a final presentation in the congregation. [Prerequisites: NT-1002 Introduction to New Testament, RSFT-1120 Methods and Hermeneutics I, RSFT-1121 Methods and Hermeneutics II. Concurrent: BS-2245 Exegesis Workshop: Greek, Faculty Consent Required; 12 max enrollment.]
