UMC HISTORY/DOCTRINE/POLITY 1 (HSFT-2000)
(01/30/2023-05/19/2023)
Course Memo
This course is designed to introduce students to the history, doctrine, and polity of the early Methodist movement in 18th century Britain. The time period covered in the course will correspond roughly to the life and ministry of John Wesley (1703-1791). Since the course will focus on the period of Methodist history prior to the beginning of major denominational splits, it is appropriate for all students from Wesleyan and/or Methodist backgrounds who desire grounding in the historical and theological foundations of Methodism. Attention will also be paid to the General Conference scheduled for May 2024. For students pursuing ordination in the United Methodist Church in particular, the course is also designed to fulfill the first half of the disciplinary requirements for history, doctrine, and polity as outlined in the United Methodist Book of Discipline. Furthermore, this course will further engage how the denomination and its predecessor bodies influenced histories of racism, colonialism, sexism, ableism, and heterosexism in the United States and beyond.[Auditors Excluded]
