Course Memo

Against the background of universal Church history and coming from a missionary perspective, the course intends to present a historical survey of the principal periods and forms of Christianity in Asia, from the Apostolic and Patristic times (the Asian Patriarchates) to the centuries of the great Asian Empires (Arabic and Mongol) and the arrival of the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, English, and French in Asia, both Catholic and Protestant. Special attention will be given to the present situation of local churches in Asia since World War II and Vatican Council II, and the rise of Asian Theology. This course is taught as a REMOTE format in conjunction with MDiv students from Loyola School of Theology in Manila (TMP 248 Selected Topics in Church History). JST/GTU students who wish to upgrade to a 4000 level will have separate requirements. [25 max enrollment]
