PASTORING FOR PROPHETIC ACTION (PS-3200)

(01/18/2022-01/21/2022)

Course Memo

This course is co-taught by Annie Fox and Jesuits West. The work for justice in our ministries is often seen as something that happens outside the parish or school through public protest, social missions and service projects. However, the reality is that the greatest justice work often happens when individual churches participate in the larger work of prophetic advocacy that help foster social movements. From churches in the South working for civil rights, to the leadership of Oscar Romero in El Salvador, church leaders have an important role to play in helping their parishioners understand the social challenges around them, build unity around the call to action, and help their flock build the courage and skills to confront injustice prophetically and strategically. Students will be trained in the basic skills of congregation-based community organizing from an Ignatian perspective. This will include skill building in intentional relationship building, power/social analysis, prophetic advocacy, leadership development and utilizing Ignatian discernment in the work of justice. Course meets daily, 1/18/22-1/21/22, from 9am-4pm at JST, with a one-hour break at noon.
