TOPICS IN THERAVADA BUDDHIST THOUGHT: Women in Theravada Buddhist Traditions. This seminar explores roles, symbols, and issues associated with women in Theravada traditions. Spanning the history of Theravada, we will explore canonical and popular representations of women in Theravada literature; review relevant historical materials; and consider issues in contemporary practice in the larger Theravada diaspora. While not geographically, historically, or textually comprehensive (an impossible task in a semester-long course), this course will nevertheless provide a well rounded introduction to common features and issues surrounding women’s participation and representation in Theravada traditions. Appropriate for MDiv, MA, and PhD students, with additional requirements for the latter. Weekly lecture/discussion/online forum; final research paper with presentation. Hybrid format.
