BUDDHIST JAPANESE II (HR-8146)
(01/31/2022-05/20/2022)
Course Memo
This course builds on Buddhist Japanese I, with the aim of teaching students to read written Japanese more quickly, though we will also engage in some limited listening practice. There is an emphasis on familiarizing students with common sentence patterns so that they can increase the speed at which they read by quickly perceiving a sentence as made of some number of chunks. Students will acquire Buddhist terminology and kanji though the readings that we cover. During the course students will read 1-2 paragraph selections (the level of difficulty will depend in part on the student’s level of facility when entering the class) from modern Japanese publications on Buddhism. Completion of Buddhist Japanese I or some familiarity with the Japanese langauge is required to take this course. Students with concerns should reach out to the instructor prior to the course to have a conversation with him. Evaluation method: Participation, homework. [12 max enrollment]
