HONORING THE LIGHT WITHIN: WRITING ABOUT PEOPLE ETHICALLY AND EFFECTIVELY (RASP-8100)

(09/07/2021-12/17/2021)

Course Memo

Many who write personal reflections, informal essays, memoirs, sermons, or op-ed pieces find ourselves at some point writing bout other people—sometimes about people groups. In this course we’ll reflect on how writers of skill and conscience depict other people ethically and effectively, with complexity and compassion. We’ll look at a variety of literary portraits in fiction and nonfiction, considering approaches and techniques and reflecting on writerly authority and purposes, what “character” means, and what we owe those we portray.
