INTRODUCTION TO ISLAM (HR-1902)

Course Memo

This course aims to introduce students to the Islamic tradition in its theological, legal, historical, and contemporary contexts, with a focus on faith and practice. Beginning with an introduction to the core tenets of Islam,  looking at the five pillars of Islam and the pillars of faith, students will then learn about the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the history of Islam. Following this, students will study the foundational sources of the tradition, as well as Islamic theology, Islamic law, and Islamic spirituality. Students will be introduced to the various sciences dedicated to the study of foundational sources. The course will end with a look at modern movements, political groups and contemporary issues.
